Generosity Matters

by Fred Heintz, Executive Director, LSS Foundation

Now is the time!

Personal tax planning does not have to wait – indeed, should not wait – for the end of the year!

Congress has extended the Qualifying Charitable Distribution (aka the Charitable IRA Rollover) through December 31, 2011. A few details:

  • You must be 70-1/2;
  • You must direct your IRA (Individual Retirement Account) custodian to distribute an outright gift to the qualified public charity of your choice (for example, LSS);
  • This is an income-tax free distribution from your IRA;
  • The check is made payable to the charity, not to you; and,
  • You may use this distribution to satisfy your annually-mandated Required Minimum Distribution.

You may or may not qualify for this opportunity. However, please know that any gift of any size is greatly appreciated and will be used to strengthen the lives of the people served through LSS in the name of Christ.

Should you want to discuss this or any other gifting ideas, please contact me at 419.243.9178 or fheintz@lssnwo.org.

We encourage a conversation with legal, tax, and financial advisors before making a significant financial decision.

Where there’s a will . . there’s a way!

If you have taken the step of formalizing a Last Will and Testament, you have designated a way for your assets to be distributed at your death. Without this document, state law will come into play – and that may not be consistent with your intentions.

To be sure, you will want to provide for those who are important to you, your family and/or your closest friends. You might also want to consider others, your congregation (perhaps 5%) and Lutheran Social Services (perhaps another 5%).

When you write or revise your will (preferably with legal advice), be specific. Include full names, addresses, and tax identification numbers. Give the institution you are naming a courtesy call so that they may say “thank you” while you are still alive.
We always encourage a conversation with your advisors – legal, tax, financial – when making a major financial decision. Please contact me if you want further information at 419.243.9178 or fheintz@lssnwo.org.
